Short answer
It depends on how the light behaves. A steady check engine light usually means you can drive carefully to the shop, but you should get it scanned soon. A flashing check engine light means stop driving as soon as it is safe. It signals an active engine misfire that can quickly destroy your catalytic converter. If anything also feels wrong (power loss, overheating, odd noises), pull over.
Steady versus flashing
A steady light covers a wide range, from something minor like a loose gas cap to a failing sensor. The car is usually drivable, but the only way to know is to read the code, so do not ignore it for weeks.
A flashing light is the urgent one. It almost always means raw fuel is reaching the exhaust, which overheats and ruins the catalytic converter, an expensive part. Reduce speed, avoid heavy acceleration, and get it in promptly.
