Why is my car suddenly so loud?

Short answer
A car that suddenly got loud almost always has an exhaust problem: most often a rusted-out muffler, a broken pipe, or a leak at a joint or gasket. Ohio road salt is hard on exhaust systems, so rust-through is common here. A louder-than-normal exhaust can also leak fumes, so it is worth getting checked. Where the noise comes from
The muffler quiets the engine, so when it rusts through or a pipe cracks, the sound jumps. A roar that grows with acceleration usually means a leak somewhere in the system; a rattle can mean a loose heat shield or a failing converter.
Because a leak upstream of the cabin can let exhaust gases in, a sudden volume change is worth diagnosing rather than living with.
