We confirm what is actually failing first, because the converter sometimes gets blamed for a problem that is really upstream.
A catalytic converter cleans up the exhaust as it leaves the engine, turning a lot of the harmful gases into less harmful ones before they reach the tailpipe. When it clogs, breaks apart inside, or stops doing its job, you can get reduced power, a rattle, a sulfur smell, or a check engine light, and ignoring it usually makes things worse.

Why we confirm the cause first
A P0420 code says the converter is not working as efficiently as the computer expects, but that does not always mean the converter itself is bad. A failing oxygen sensor, an exhaust leak, or an engine that is running rich can all set the same code, and replacing the converter would not fix any of those.
It is also the other way around: a misfire or an oil-burning engine can poison a healthy converter over time. We check for those upstream causes so you are not back in a few months with a ruined new part. That is the whole point of finding the cause first, then quoting the fix.
Converter theft and what to do
Catalytic converters are targeted by thieves because they contain small amounts of valuable metals, and a stolen one leaves your vehicle very loud and running poorly. If yours was cut off, we can replace it and, depending on the vehicle, talk with you about a shield or other steps to make the next one harder to take.
If your converter is still original and under your vehicle's factory emissions warranty, it is worth checking that paperwork before you pay out of pocket, since some converter repairs may be covered. Bring any warranty documents you have and we can factor that into the conversation.

- What does a P0420 code mean?
- P0420 means the engine computer sees the catalytic converter running below the efficiency it expects, based on the oxygen sensors before and after it. It often points to the converter, but a bad oxygen sensor, an exhaust leak, or an engine running rich can set the same code. We scan it and check those other causes first, so you do not pay for a part you did not need.
- What does a catalytic converter actually do?
- It sits in your exhaust and uses a coated honeycomb inside to convert much of the harmful gas from combustion into less harmful gas before it leaves the tailpipe. That is its whole job, cleaning up the exhaust. When it clogs or breaks down internally, it can choke the engine and trigger the check engine light.
- Do I need to fix the converter if Trumbull County has no emissions test?
- Trumbull County is not in Ohio's E-Check area, so there is no local emissions test you have to pass. That said, a failed converter is still worth addressing because it can rob power and fuel economy, set a check engine light, and a broken-up one can rattle apart and restrict the exhaust. We will tell you honestly how urgent yours is.
- Why does my exhaust smell like rotten eggs?
- That sulfur smell usually comes from the catalytic converter not processing the exhaust properly, which can mean the converter is failing or that the engine is running too rich and overwhelming it. Because a rich-running condition can be the real trigger, we check for that rather than assuming the converter is the only issue. Bring it in and we will track down the source.
- Can a bad catalytic converter cause a rattle?
- Yes. The ceramic honeycomb inside can break apart, and the loose pieces rattle around like material in a can, usually loudest at idle or when you tap the gas. A rattle like that is a sign the converter is coming apart internally, and the loose material can also clog the system. We can confirm it on the lift.
- OEM or aftermarket converter, which should I get?
- Both can be good choices depending on your vehicle and budget. OEM converters are built to match your exact vehicle and tend to be the surest fit, while a quality aftermarket converter often costs less and works well for many vehicles. We will go over the trade-offs for your specific vehicle and give you a written estimate either way.
- My catalytic converter was stolen. Can you replace it?

- Is my converter covered under warranty?
- Catalytic converters are sometimes covered for a period under a vehicle's factory emissions warranty, so it is worth checking before you pay out of pocket. Look at your owner's paperwork or call your dealer to confirm what applies to your vehicle, and bring any documents you have. We can take that into account when we go over your options.
- Will a new converter improve my gas mileage and power?
- If a clogged or failing converter was choking your exhaust, replacing it can restore the power and fuel economy you lost. A restricted converter makes the engine work harder to breathe, so clearing that out helps. If the real problem turned out to be a sensor or an engine issue, fixing that is what brings the performance back, which is why we diagnose first.

- Yes.
