A tune-up is not what it was forty years ago. There are no points to set or carburetors to adjust on a modern engine. Today a tune-up means fresh spark plugs, checking the ignition coils, and replacing the air and other filters that have done their time, so the engine fires cleanly and breathes the way it should. Done at the right interval, it keeps an engine running smooth and efficient.

What a tune-up does and does not cover
A tune-up focuses on the ignition and intake side of the engine: spark plugs, coils, plug wires if your engine has them, and the air filter. Those are the parts that wear and that directly affect how cleanly the engine fires and how well it breathes. Fresh plugs and a clean filter can smooth out an idle, firm up a stumbling throttle, and recover mileage you have been losing.
It is not a cure-all, though. If your rough running comes from a fuel delivery problem, a vacuum leak, or a sensor fault, new plugs alone will not fix it. That is why we scan and look the engine over first, so the tune-up actually solves your problem instead of just resetting the clock.

- What does a tune-up actually include these days?

- How often should I get a tune-up?
- It depends mostly on your spark plugs. Many modern plugs last 60,000 to 100,000 miles, while older copper plugs are due sooner. We check your maintenance schedule and the actual condition of the plugs and tell you whether it is time.

- Often, yes, if the rough idle is coming from worn spark plugs or a weak coil, which is a common cause. But a rough idle can also come from a vacuum leak, a fuel issue, or a sensor, so we scan and inspect first to be sure a tune-up is the right fix.
- Can a tune-up improve my gas mileage?
- It can, if your mileage dropped because of worn plugs, a weak coil, or a clogged air filter making the engine work harder. Fixing those lets the engine run efficiently again. If something else is dragging your mileage down, we will find it during the inspection.
- How do I know if I need new spark plugs?
- Common signs are a rough idle, hesitation when you accelerate, hard starting, a misfire code, or falling fuel economy. We can also pull a plug and read its condition. If they are worn or fouled, we will let you know and nothing gets replaced without your go-ahead.
- What is the difference between spark plugs and ignition coils?
- The coil creates the high-voltage spark, and the spark plug delivers it inside the cylinder to ignite the fuel. Both can cause a misfire when they go bad. During a tune-up we replace the plugs and check the coils, and we only recommend coil replacement if one is actually failing.
- My car is hard to start in the morning. Is that a tune-up issue?
- It can be, since worn plugs or a weak coil make cold starts harder. It can also point to a fuel or battery problem. We will scan it, check the ignition, and confirm the cause, then recommend the fix.
- Do you use OEM or aftermarket spark plugs?
- We use quality plugs matched to your engine, the type and heat range the manufacturer calls for. Using the right plug matters for how the engine runs, so we do not just grab the cheapest box. As a NAPA Auto Care Center we have good parts on hand.
- How much does a tune-up cost?
- It depends on your engine, since plug counts and coil access vary a lot from one vehicle to another. We look at your specific car, tell you what it needs, and give you a written estimate. The work starts when you say go. No upsells.
