When the weather turns hot in Northeast Ohio, a working A/C goes from a nice-to-have to something you really want on the drive home. At Super Tire & Muffler, we diagnose air conditioning problems by finding the actual cause rather than just topping it off and sending you on your way.
An air conditioning system is sealed and is not supposed to lose refrigerant. So if yours is low, there is a leak somewhere. Simply recharging a leaking system will get you cold air for a little while, but it is a temporary fix, and the refrigerant will leak right back out. We look for the leak first so you are not paying for the same recharge twice.

We find the leak first, then recharge
Refrigerant lives in a closed loop, so a system that is low has a leak by definition. If we just add refrigerant without finding that leak, you get cold air for a few days or weeks and then you are right back where you started, out the cost of the refrigerant. Some leaks are also slow and hard to see, so we use leak detection to pinpoint them.
Finding and fixing the leak first is the honest way to do A/C work, and it saves you money over the long run. Once the system holds pressure the way it should, we recharge it to the correct level and check that the vents are blowing cold.
The parts that make A/C cold
Your A/C relies on several parts working together: the compressor pumps the refrigerant, the condenser up front sheds heat, the evaporator inside the dash is what actually cools the air, and hoses and seals tie it together. A failure or leak in any one of them can leave you blowing warm.

- Why is my car A/C blowing warm air?
- The most common reason is low refrigerant from a leak, but it can also be a failing compressor, a clogged condenser, or an electrical issue. Because the system is sealed, low refrigerant always means something is leaking. We check the pressures and look for the leak so we fix the real cause instead of just topping it off.
- Can you just recharge my A/C?
- We can recharge it, but if the system is low it is because of a leak, and a recharge alone is only a temporary fix. The refrigerant will leak back out and you will be blowing warm again, having paid for refrigerant that escaped. We would rather find the leak first so the repair actually lasts, and we will call you with what we find and what it will take.
- How much does A/C repair cost?
- It depends on what is causing the problem, since a leaking hose, a worn compressor, and a failed condenser are very different repairs. - Why does my A/C work at first and then blow warm?
- Cooling that fades after a while often points to a low refrigerant charge from a leak, a compressor clutch that drops out as it heats up, or a system that ices up and then cannot cool. These are different problems with different fixes, so we test the system to find which one it is rather than guessing.
- What refrigerant does my car use, R-134a or R-1234yf?
- Older vehicles generally use R-134a, while many newer vehicles use R-1234yf, and the two are not interchangeable. The correct one for your vehicle is usually listed on a label under the hood. We service both, so either way we can recharge your system with the right refrigerant.
- How do you find an A/C leak?
- We use leak detection methods suited to the system, which can include checking pressures, looking for oily residue at fittings and components, and using detection tools to pinpoint where refrigerant is escaping. Some leaks are slow and not obvious, so finding them takes the right approach rather than a guess. Once we locate it, we call you with what we found and an estimate.
- Is it bad to keep running my A/C when it blows warm?
- Running it when it is low on refrigerant is not great, because the refrigerant also carries the oil that lubricates the compressor, and a starved compressor can wear out. It will not damage the rest of the car, but you risk turning a smaller repair into a bigger one. It is better to have it checked before the compressor goes.
- Why does my A/C smell musty when I turn it on?
- A musty smell usually comes from mildew or buildup on the evaporator and in the vent system, where moisture naturally collects. It is more about the air handling than the cooling itself, and a clogged cabin air filter can make it worse. We can look into the cause and recommend a fix.
- How long does an A/C repair take?
- A diagnosis and recharge can often be done the same day, while bigger repairs like a compressor or evaporator take longer because of the parts and labor involved. Once we know what is wrong, we will give you a realistic time along with the written estimate. Booking ahead helps, especially in summer when A/C work is busy.
