Cold mornings and your diesel
Northeast Ohio winters are tough on diesels. Glow plugs have to be healthy to fire a cold engine, and diesels lean hard on their batteries, so a weak one shows up first when it is cold. We test the glow plug system and the batteries together so a no-start in January does not catch you off guard.
Fuel that gets water in it or a clogged filter can also cause hard starts and rough running. We check the fuel and water separator and keep the filters fresh so the engine gets clean fuel.

- It depends on your engine, how you drive, and whether you tow, so we follow what your truck's maker calls for. Diesels use specific oil and filters, and we use the right ones. Bring it in or call and we will set a schedule that fits how you use the truck.
- How often does a diesel fuel filter need to be changed?
- Diesel fuel filters and water separators need attention more often than gas trucks because clean fuel matters so much to these engines. The exact interval depends on your truck and fuel quality. We check the filter and separator at service and replace them on schedule.
- My diesel is hard to start in the cold. What causes that?
- Cold-start trouble on a diesel usually points to glow plugs, the batteries, or the fuel system. Glow plugs have to heat the cylinders, and diesels need strong batteries to crank. We test all three and tell you which one is weak.
- Why do diesels go through batteries so fast?
- Diesels need a lot of cranking power, and many run two batteries working together. That heavy demand, plus cold Ohio winters, wears batteries out faster than on a gas car. We test the whole charging system, not just the battery, so we fix the real cause.
- What is the wait-to-start or glow plug light telling me?
- That light means the glow plugs are warming the cylinders so the engine can fire when cold. If it stays on, takes a long time, or the truck is hard to start, the glow plug system may need testing. We can check the plugs, relay, and wiring and tell you what is going on.
- Can you read diesel trouble codes and check engine lights?
- Yes. As a NAPA Auto Care Center we have scan tools that read diesel-specific codes. A code points us toward the system, then we test from there to find the real cause instead of just throwing parts at it. We go over what we find with you, and any repair waits for your okay.
- My diesel is smoking or running rough. Should I be worried?
- It is worth a look. More smoke than usual or a rough idle can come from fuel, glow plugs, sensors, or other issues, and some are simple fixes. Bring it in and we will diagnose it, call you with the problem, and give you a written estimate. Nothing happens without your approval.
- Do I need an appointment for diesel service?
- Walk-ins are welcome, but for diesel work we recommend calling ahead with your year and engine so we can confirm we can service it and have parts ready. We are open Monday through Friday 8am to 5pm and Saturday 8am to noon, with Sunday by appointment.
