How to check your tire pressure

Correct tire pressure keeps your tires wearing evenly, your fuel economy up, and your handling safe. It takes two minutes with a basic gauge, and it is one of the easiest things you can do for your car.

Find your recommended PSI
Open the driver door and read the sticker on the door jamb. That number, not the higher "max" number on the tire sidewall, is the pressure to use.

Check when tires are cold
Measure before driving, or after the car has sat a few hours. Driving heats the tires and raises the reading.

Remove the valve cap
Unscrew the small cap on the tire valve and set it somewhere you will not lose it.

Press the gauge on the valve
Press the gauge straight onto the valve stem firmly until the hiss stops, then read the pressure.

Add or release air
If it is low, add air and recheck. If it is high, press the small pin in the valve briefly to release some, then recheck.

Replace the cap and repeat
Screw the valve cap back on and check all four tires, and your spare while you are at it.
