How to check your engine oil

Checking your oil takes a minute and can catch a low level before it becomes engine damage. Do it about once a month and before any long trip.

Park level and shut off the engine
Park on flat ground and turn the engine off. On most cars, wait a few minutes so the oil drains back down for an accurate reading.

Find and pull the dipstick
Open the hood and locate the oil dipstick (usually a bright loop handle). Pull it all the way out.

Wipe, reinsert, and pull again
Wipe the stick clean, push it fully back in, then pull it out once more to get a clean reading.

Read the level
The oil film should sit between the two marks (or in the crosshatched area) near the tip. Below the low mark means you are about a quart low.

Check the color and feel
Healthy oil is amber to light brown. Very dark, gritty, or milky oil is a sign it needs attention.

Top off if low
If it is low, add a little of the correct oil at a time, waiting and rechecking so you do not overfill.
