Old oil breaks down and turns to sludge, loses its ability to cool and protect, and lets heat and friction wear the engine. Skip it long enough and you risk accelerated wear, overheating, and eventually catastrophic, expensive engine damage. A routine oil change is a tiny fraction of the cost of a new engine, which is why it is the single best maintenance habit you can keep.
How the damage progresses
As oil ages it thickens with contaminants and stops flowing into tight clearances. The engine runs hotter, the oil light may eventually come on, and internal parts wear faster than they should. Push past that and you can spin a bearing or seize the engine, repairs that often cost more than the vehicle is worth.
Going a little past your interval once will not destroy the engine, but making a habit of it quietly shortens its life.
