Why is my steering wheel shaking?

Short answer
A steering wheel that shakes at highway speed usually means the tires are out of balance. Shaking you feel mainly when braking points to warped or unevenly worn brake rotors. Shaking at low speed, or a wheel that feels loose and wanders, points to worn front-end parts like tie rods or ball joints. That last one is a safety issue, so have it checked promptly.
Shaking at highway speed: balance
A shake that starts around 55 to 65 mph and buzzes through the wheel is the classic sign of tires out of balance. A lost wheel weight, a tire that was never balanced well, or even packed-in mud or snow inside the wheel can do it. Balancing is a quick fix, and it is the first thing to rule out because it is also the most common cause.
Shaking when braking: rotors
If the wheel shakes mainly while you brake, especially on a long stop from speed, the front rotors have likely worn unevenly or warped, and you may feel a pulse in the pedal at the same time. This one does not fix itself, and braking performance suffers as it gets worse, so have the brakes measured soon.
Shaking at low speed or all the time: front-end parts
Worn tie rod ends, ball joints, or control-arm bushings let the front wheels wander and shimmy, often worst over bumps or in turns. A separated belt inside a tire feels similar and usually shows up as a slow wobble at parking-lot speeds. Both deserve prompt attention.
When to stop driving
A mild highway-speed buzz is safe enough to drive to the shop. Stop driving and get help right away if the shake came on suddenly, turns violent, comes with clunking from the front end, or the vehicle pulls hard when braking. Those point to a part that is failing rather than merely worn.
